Cairo 19^th December 2018: Juhayna organized a panel discussion that tackled the company’s efforts in rationalizing the consumption of energy resources in the framework of its strategic plan, based on creating shared Value to achieve the sustainable development goals. The session was held on the sidelines of Juhayna’s Energy Day annual celebration, which comes in line with Egypt’s 2030 strategy for sustainable development, which aims to optimize the use of environmental resources.

The session was moderated by Mrs. Passant Fouad, External Communications director at Juhayna, Eng. Mostafa Agamy, Director of Energy Department at Juhayna, and Mr. Samir Khafagy, UNIDO’s representative. During the session, the company highlighted the initiatives and achievements to rationalize energy resources within its factories, which were divided into three axes: 1) Energy generation in smart ways: by putting solar panels on the roofs of factories. 2) Improving energy efficiency: Through lighting, the factory with LED lamps, solar heating and using smart boilers. 3) Energy tools: energy measurement system, management software to overcome the challenges and increase productivity.

“Egypt is moving towards responsible consumption and rationalizing the use of energy as part of its development strategy to support the environment sector, which goes in line with the global trend. That was a motive for us to initiate a specialized department for energy to share international and local experiences in this field and discuss all the challenges and opportunities in order to come up with optimal resources use,” said Mrs. Fouad.

“We are always keen to follow environmentally friendly practices in all stages of production. The Juice factory (Al Dawleya) has obtained the ISO 50001 and the company is working to acquire it for the rest of its factories during the second and third quarter of 2019. The company has also achieved tangible successes in rationalizing consumption, hence, in the period from January 2017 to September 2018 we saved about 18% kWh per hour in electricity and 10% m3 in natural gas consumption. We look forward to achieving more successes in the coming years, especially as this sector is vital and full of developments that can be reflected positively on the industry as a whole in terms of improving and increasing productivity, working on profit margin growth, and reducing the negative impact on the environment.” Fouad Added.

The company has also been honoured by the ENCPC and the UNIDO in recognition for its efforts in the environment sector and by working with them on the “Green Technology Transfer” program. The program aimed at reducing industrial pollution and strengthening cooperation with various local and international scientific institutions, which is positively reflected on the improvement of the quality and competitiveness of the Egyptian product regionally and internationally.

For his part, Mr. Khafagy, UNIDO’s representative, praised Juhayna’s continuous efforts in the environment sector, especially in energy and water conservation. He added that the participation of a leading company in the program has led to proud results in Juhayna’s two plants Al-Marwa and Al-Dawlya. He called on other companies and factories to take Juhayna’s story as an exemplary model in this field.

It is worth mentioning that Juhayna is committed to meeting the highest environmental standards, as it is an integral part of its strategy since its establishment. This is in line with the Seventh and Twelfth Sustainable Development Goals, which state: “Ensuring affordable access by all to reliable and sustainable modern energy services” and to “ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns”.
